Our June meeting is the Orchid Society’s AGM , at which the Executive for the coming year will be elected, followed by the ever-popular Strawberry Social. But before we dig into the strawberry treats, we have another treat in store: A talk by Stacey Hickman entitled “The Orchid’s Secret Allies: Beneficial Insects at Work”.
Stacey Hickman is employed with Natural Insect Control for over 25 years as a greenhouse consultant for biological controls. She has worked closely with clients in developing new methods for biological control. She has experience also as an instructor at the Niagara Park School of Horticulture and Brock University Continuing Education Department.
From aphids and fungus gnats to thrips, mealybugs, spider mites, and whiteflies, Stacey will remind us of the pests that threaten orchid collections (as if we need reminding!) and introduce the remarkable natural enemies that keep them in check. Meet aphid assassins, mealybug destroyers, predatory mites, parasitic wasps, and even microscopic nematodes that act as nature’s own pest control team.
Through real-world examples, fascinating insect facts, and practical biological control strategies, you’ll learn how to build an effective defence system for your orchids while reducing reliance on pesticides.
Come discover why every successful orchid collection has a secret army—and learn how to recruit your own!
For the Strawberry Social, bring your strawberry-themed goodies (remembering we have no access to fridge or stove), your beautiful orchids in bloom for the Show Table and any orchids or orchid-related items you may have for the raffle. And be prepared to enjoy the event, in company with your fellow members.
The meeting will take place in Room 5 (subject to confirmation) at the RBG headquarters, 680 Plains Road West, Burlington Ontario. The formal meeting starts at 2 pm but you are encouraged to arrive as early as 1:30 to socialize and interact with vendors. Members and guests welcome.
